I was thinking that perhaps Great Dane and other giant breeders would have the same problems.?
I'm a dog trainer but stumped! Is there a way to keep my dog from wagging tail so hard?
I have bred this lineage for over 20 years, and this is the first time I've had this problem. My 75 pound male beats me PAINFULLY with ihis tail! It is just like being beat with a hose. I hate to scold him to make him less happy, but I actually have bruises from being beaten by his 'love'. When I stoop down I get it across my face, (OUCH!)when I stand up I get it on my butt or leggs. He is 29 inches at the shoulders, so hits me high. He also knocks anything within tail reach off the tables, especially the dining table. Putting him on the grooming table is taking my life in my hands. He is always a big happy clown. Has anynone else solved this problem?
I am going to be showing him this summer. the idea to train to 'sit' when anyone approaches would work, but not for a show prospect. I can just see him sitting in the ring as the judge approaches!
Use a vel-cro strap and vel-cro the dogs tail to its leg when the dog is excited, or tie a string to the end of the dogs tail and tie the other end of the string to the collar. This way the tail will be pointing up and when it tries to wag it will be up in the air. Or tie a string to the end of your dog's tail and a small weight on the other end, put the wieght on a little cart with wheels, or find some other wieght with wheels alrdy attachted. Crop the tail (cruel but works). Or dont let the dog in the house (cruel also). Or sell the dog. Trade the dog for a smaller dog. Learn how to speak dog and have a long conversation with him about the effects and long term pain this is causing you ( you could make tons o-money if you can master this one). Call the animal planet and get that dog whisperer in to give him the (dr. Phill). I hope you find one of these wonderfull answers to be of some help
.
