The antique fire extinguisher first came in the market in the early 1700s which consists of fire extinguishing liquid and a chamber which is full of gunpowder. When a fire is ignited, the fuse is lighted which in turn ignites the gunpowder which releases the firefighting liquid into the flames. In the year 1818 a person named as George William manufactured the first modern type of fire extinguisher. It consisted of a solution of potassium carbonate and compressed air contained in a cylinder made of copper material. When they are operated, the compressed air present in it would expel the solution of potassium carbonate which starts the fire. The soda acid fire extinguisher was manufactured by Francois Carlier in the year 1866.
He came up with the idea of mixing the water with sodium bicarbonate, tartaric acid for producing carbon dioxide gas. A person named as Almon Granger discovered a formula in which he mixed sodium bicarbonate with sulfuric acid which also produces sodium dioxide. This particular gas pressurizes the water which then comes out of the small hose present in it. The first foam fire extinguisher came in the market in the year 1905. It worked in the same manner as the soda acid types, which consisted of a mixture of water, sodium bicarbonate and a foaming compound. In the antique type of products the main cylinder consisted of the inverted chemicals which produced the fire which formed carbon dioxide gas in a brownish color.
A new type of product was manufactured in which you have to use carbon tetrachloride in the place of carbon dioxide. This technology was started first by a New England Company named as Pyrene. This particular type can be differentiated by the chrome or brass cylinder and with also a hand pump. They became famous with the car industry during that particular time as it was suitable for liquid and electrical fires. This product is designed in such a way that it produced flames releasing the carbon tetrachloride which vaporizes into the fumes.
