Connected or Disconnected when on AC Power
Question : "Should keep Laptop plugged in while using it.I'm wondering what's the best way to use my laptop and extend my battery's life. When I'm near a power supply should i use it or run on battery and then when it's depleted plug it in
What's the best way I mostly use my laptop as a desktop and i want my laptop battery to never dye out,Does leaving the laptop ac adapter in a laptop damage it"
Answer: "No it does not damage the laptop in any way. It is the same when you keep a desktop computer plugged in all the time. However, remember that the ac adapter is also the charger for the laptop battery. And keeping it plugged in will not increase the life of the battery.
If you have the lithium ion battery that is common in most laptops today, you don't have to worry about a memory effect like the old nickel cadmium batteries had to contend with. When your computer gives you a low battery warning, that is the time to charge it. You do not have to wait until the dell inspiron 1520 battery completely discharges (like with the older nickel cadmium batteries) before recharging it.
Generally speaking, most laptop batteries come with a short warranty period and are excluded from all extended warranties for a reason. That is because the life of most laptop batteries degrades noticeably after one year. This one year life is not set in stone. Some will last longer and some will last shorter. So expect to notice that, after about one year, your fully charged battery will require more frequent charging.
Keep your battery away from extreme temperatures as much as possible. Room temperature is ideal.
Lithium ion batteries generally age (wear out) at the same rate. However, it is the ac adapter/charger design and the number of charge/discharge cycles that can affect the aging rate. One charge/discharge cycle is charging up the battery and then using it until you receive a low battery warning indication.
Apple recommends that you charge and discharge your dell xps m1530 battery at least once every month. That means charge it to 100%, then use it until you get a low battery warning, then charge it up to 50%, then you can remove the battery and leave the ac adapter plugged in. Repeat this at least once a month. Before you remove it temporarily, be sure to charge it up 50% first.
So basically speaking, you can keep the dell ac adapter plugged into your laptop computer so that you can use it like a desktop. Just follow the suggestions above to get the most life out of your laptop battery. This is the way my wife and I do it with our laptops."
Dell recommends: "The battery is automatically charged whenever the computer is plugged in. Dell advises that you leave the battery in the system at all times so it will retain its charge. It will not harm the battery to leave it in the system, even if you are always using the computer on AC power."
forum.notebookreview list the Pros and Cons:
"Things to consider if:
You are removing the battery while on AC power:
Pros:
Preserves charge cycles
Keeps the laptop battery temperature lower thus slowing the aging process
Cons:
Lose the battery as backup power during power outages and voltage drops
Unsaved work will be lost and data may be corrupted without backup power
UPS (uninterruptible power supply) needed to serve as backup power source
You are leaving the laptop battery connected while on AC power:
Pros:
Battery serves as backup power during power outages and voltage drops
More convenient for "grab-and-go" use
Battery doesn't require sufficient warming time (as it would after being stored in the refrigerator)
Cons:
Loss of charge cycles
Battery's temperature is higher on AC power resulting in accelerated aging"
